When building a patio one has a tendency to get in a hurry and not get the base of the patio compacted evenly. If the base is not compacted evenly, the stones will settle differently and therefore, after a few years you may find areas of your patio that have settled more than others. This settling can also happen in areas of heavy traffic. This can cause pooling of water on the stones and may cause someone to slip or trip on the uneven areas. Therefore, it is a good idea to get the stones back to where they are all level again. When all the stones are level it also gives your patio a clean and neat appearance.

WARNING: When working with fresh new patio stones, it is a good idea to wear gloves to protect your hands. You especially need to protect your hands in case you drop one of the bricks. Gloves will protect your hands well. Also, when tamping the sand it is a good idea to wear goggles to protect your eyes in case of flying stones or small objects.

Leveling A Portion of The Patio
To begin, you need to determine where the stones are not level. The best way to do this is to lay a long, straight 2 x 4 across the stones. Wherever the stones do not touch the board is where you need to relevel them. Carefully lift all the affected stones up by putting a trowel into the crack between the stones and gently pulling them up and out. Set the stones aside while working on the hole you have created.Let’s Get The Patio Stones Level Again!

Once the affected stones have been removed, put sand in the hole and tamp it down so it is even with the bottom of the bricks around the area. Make sure you tamp it very well. Then, replace the stones, checking to make sure they are level with the tops of the surrounding stones. Pour sand into the cracks between the stones and brush the excess off.

Leveling the Whole Patio
If you need to re-level the whole patio, the first step is to remove all the stones and set them off to one side. Rake the bed of the patio evenly and then tamp it thoroughly. To level the whole area you can use a very straight 2 x 4 board and set a level on top of it. Move the board around checking all the area. When you find a low spot, move sand to fill that area. After making sure the whole area is level, tamp thoroughly again.

The next step is to put an inch of loose sand over the tamped area. This is the sand you will be setting the stones in. You want it loose so the stones can be pushed down into it. You do not want them to move and this loose sand will prevent that while you are completing their installation. Make sure this sand is also level. An easy way to level loose sand is to take the very straight 2 x 4 and pull it across the sand area and adjust the sand where needed.

Now you are ready to replace all the bricks or stones. Replace them leaving a small area between each brick. As you put the stones back, make sure you lay the level across them to guarantee the patio will be level when you are finished. Pour sand onto the stones and sweep into the areas between them. Sweep the excess sand off the area.

You now have a completely level patio!
